Tall Utah Celery – The Crisp and Stringless Heirloom Champion for Refreshing Garden Crunch

Shop the highest quality Tall Utah Celery seeds for a crisp and flavorful harvest. Tall Utah 52-70 is widely considered the gold standard for home-grown celery, known for its thick, succulent stalks and lack of the tough "strings" found in many other varieties. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this heirloom because it maintains a beautiful medium-green color without the need for trenching or blanching, making it much easier for the home gardener to manage. This variety is prized for its high water content and refreshing snap, making it a favorite for fresh veggie trays, peanut butter snacks, and adding a clean, aromatic base to your favorite soups and holiday stuffings.

In the garden, Tall Utah is a hardy performer that appreciates the cooler temperatures of spring and autumn. While celery has a reputation for being finicky, this variety is particularly resilient and produces vigorous, upright plants that can reach 24 to 30 inches in height. It is a fantastic companion plant for beans, leeks, and tomatoes, as its aromatic oils can help mask the scent of neighboring vegetables from pests. Because it is an heirloom, the leaves are also packed with intense flavor and can be harvested as a savory herb for seasoning stocks and sauces. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and uniform growth, ensuring you can grow a professional-quality crop of this garden staple with total confidence.

    Tall Utah Planting Instructions:

    1. When to Plant: Celery has a long growing season and is best started indoors 10 to 12 weeks before the last spring frost. It can be moved to the garden once temperatures are consistently above 50°F. For a fall crop in warmer climates, transplant in late summer.

    2. Preparation: Celery is a "heavy feeder" and requires very rich, organic soil that holds moisture well. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or compost into the planting bed. Celery does not like to dry out, so choosing a spot with easy access to water is essential.

    3. Sowing: Celery seeds are tiny and require light to germinate. Press them lightly into the surface of your seed-starting mix but do not cover them with soil. Keep the soil surface consistently moist and provide plenty of light. Germination can be slow, often taking 14 to 21 days.

    4. Thinning and Care: Once transplants are 4 to 6 inches tall, set them into the garden. Mulch heavily with straw or compost to keep the roots cool and retain moisture. Celery requires consistent, deep watering—aim for 1.5 to 2 inches of water per week. If the plant dries out, the stalks can become tough and bitter.

    5. Pests and Diseases: Celery can be susceptible to aphids and celery leaf tiers. Keep the garden free of weeds to reduce pest habitat. To prevent fungal issues like early or late blight, ensure proper spacing for airflow and avoid overhead watering, which keeps foliage wet for too long.
