All American Parsnip – The "Sweet as Candy" Heirloom Root for Nutty, Creamy Harvests

Shop the highest quality All American Parsnip seeds for a harvest that truly stands the test of time. When it comes to flavor that improves with the cold, All American is the "Gold Standard." This classic heirloom is famous for its smooth, ivory-white skin and its tender, coreless flesh that develops a rich, honey-like sweetness after the first frost. At The Seed Guy®, we recommend this variety because it offers a gourmet flavor profile—nutty, earthy, and sweet—that you simply cannot find in grocery store parsnips which are often woody or bitter.

In the garden, All American Parsnip is a reliable producer of uniform, 10-to-12-inch roots that resist canker and store exceptionally well. This variety is a "marathon runner," taking its time to develop deep flavors while staying tender and fiber-free. It is a fantastic companion plant for onions and garlic, which can help keep garden pests away from the parsnip's delicate tops. At The Seed Guy®, our seeds are tested for elite germination, ensuring you get heavy yields of beautiful, tapered roots perfect for roasting, mashing, or hearty stews. Growing these in your own backyard allows you to leave them in the ground through the winter, letting nature's "sugar-chill" turn every root into a garden-fresh treat.

    All American Parsnip Planting Instructions:

    1. When to Plant: Parsnips require a long growing season. Sow outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil is workable and not frozen. For a late fall harvest that you can "overwinter," sow again in mid-summer.

    2. Preparation: These roots love to go deep! You must double-dig your garden bed to at least 12 inches, removing all rocks, sticks, and hard clumps. If the root hits a rock, it will "fork." Work in plenty of organic compost, but avoid fresh manure which can cause hairy roots.

    3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep. Parsnip seeds are notoriously slow and "fussy" to sprout. The secret is to keep the soil surface constantly moist. If the soil crusts over, the tiny sprout won't be able to break through. Many gardeners "sand" the row or use a light mulch to keep it damp.

    4. Care: Once seedlings reach 2-3 inches tall, thin them carefully to 3-4 inches apart to give the bulbs room to expand. Keep the bed meticulously weeded, as parsnips do not like to compete for nutrients. Mulching helps keep the roots cool and the moisture levels even.

    5. Pests and Diseases: The Carrot Rust Fly is the most common visitor. To protect your crop, use floating row covers or plant alongside pungent onions. To prevent rot, ensure your soil is well-draining and never allow water to sit in the crown of the plant.
