Connecticut Field Pumpkin Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Pumpkins are sun-worshippers! Wait until the soil is thoroughly warm (at least 70°F) and all danger of frost has passed. In most regions, this is late May or early June to ensure a harvest before the first autumn frost.
2. Preparation: These plants are "heavy feeders." Prepare your "hills" by mixing in a generous amount of aged manure or compost. They need plenty of space to roam, so ensure your patch is large enough for the vines to sprawl without crowding.
3. Sowing: Plant 4-5 seeds per hill, 1 inch deep. Once the seedlings are about 3 inches tall, thin them to the two strongest plants. This ensures they have the "elbow room" and nutrients needed to produce massive fruits.
4. Care: Water deeply at the base of the plant, especially during dry spells. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent mildew. As the pumpkins grow, you can gently place a piece of cardboard or a flat stone under the fruit to prevent ground rot and keep the skin uniform.
5. Pests and Diseases: Keep a sharp eye out for Squash Bugs and Cucumber Beetles. To keep your vines healthy, ensure good air circulation and harvest only when the vine begins to wither and the rind is hard enough to resist a fingernail poke.
