Jack O'Lantern Pumpkin Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Direct sow in the garden after the soil has warmed to at least 70°F. If you have a short growing season, you can start seeds indoors in peat pots 3 weeks before the last frost, but be careful not to disturb the roots during transplanting.
2. Preparation: Pumpkins love rich, "mucky" soil. Dig a hole and fill it with compost or well-rotted manure before mounding the soil back on top to create your planting hill. This provides a "slow-release" feast for the roots.
3. Sowing: Plant 3 seeds per hill, 1 inch deep. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Once the plants are established, mulch the hill to keep the roots cool and the soil damp.
4. Care: These vines love to climb and sprawl. If you are short on space, you can train them along a sturdy fence. Pollination is key—make sure you have plenty of flowers nearby to attract the bees that will turn your blossoms into pumpkins.
5. Pests and Diseases: Squash Vine Borers are the enemy here. Check the base of the stems regularly for "frass" (sawdust-like material). To prevent powdery mildew, water early in the day so the sun can dry the leaves quickly.
