Red Burgundy Okra Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Okra is a tropical plant. Sow outdoors only when the soil is very warm (at least 70°F) and nighttime temperatures are consistently above 60°F.
2. Preparation: For faster results, soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to soften the hard seed coat. Choose a full-sun location with fertile soil.
3. Sowing: Plant 2-3 seeds per spot, 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, thin to the strongest plant.
4. Care: Keep the area weed-free. Water deeply during dry spells. Harvest the pods when they are 3-4 inches long; if they get too large, they can become woody.
5. Pests and Diseases: Corn earworms and aphids can occasionally target okra. To prevent wilt and rot, ensure your garden has excellent drainage and avoid over-saturating the soil. Rotating your crops annually is the best defense against root-knot nematodes.
