Red Burgundy Onion Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: In the South, plant in fall for a spring harvest. In the North, start indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost and transplant out as soon as the soil can be worked.
2. Preparation: Onions are "heavy feeders." Work in plenty of compost or aged manure. They require loose, well-draining soil to allow the bulbs to expand.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep. If starting in flats, keep them in a cool, bright area. When transplanting, do not bury the base too deep.
4. Care: Onions have shallow roots and do not like competition. Keep the bed meticulously weeded. Water regularly to ensure the soil stays moist but never soggy.
5. Pests and Diseases: Onion Thrips are the most common pest; they hide in the leaf folds. To prevent "downy mildew" and "purple blotch," ensure good spacing for airflow and avoid watering the tops of the plants in the evening.
