Orange Flesh Honeydew Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Honeydews love the heat! Direct sow only when the soil is consistently warm (at least 70°F) in late spring. In cooler climates, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost in peat pots to protect their sensitive root systems during transplanting.
2. Preparation: Choose a location with full sun and rich, well-draining soil. Melons are "Heavy Feeders," so work in compost or aged manure before planting. Creating mounds or "hills" about 4 feet apart allows for better drainage and keeps the roots warm.
3. Sowing: Plant 3-4 seeds per mound at a depth of 1/2 inch. Once the seedlings are 2-3 inches tall, thin to the strongest 2 plants per hill to ensure each vine has plenty of room to roam and produce.
4. Watering and Care: Provide deep, consistent watering at the base of the plant. As the fruit approaches full size, reduce watering slightly—this "Concentrates the Sugars," ensuring your Honeydew is as sweet as honey. Mulching with straw helps keep the smooth rinds clean and prevents rot.
5. Harvesting: Unlike Cantaloupes, Honeydews do not "slip" from the vine. Harvest when the rind turns from a pale green to a creamy, buttery white/yellow color. The blossom end should feel slightly soft to the touch, and the melon will omit a faint, sweet fragrance when it’s ready for the table!
