Stowell's Evergreen Corn – The Legendary "King of All White Sweet Corn" for an Extended and Succulent Harvest

Shop the highest quality Stowell's Evergreen Corn seeds for a premium garden experience. First developed by Nathan Stowell in 1848, this variety earned the name "Evergreen" because it remains in the fresh "milk stage" longer than almost any other sweet corn in existence. While other corns quickly become starchy and tough if not picked immediately, Stowell's keeps its incredible sweetness and tender texture on the stalk for days. At The Seed Guy®, we recommend this heirloom for the home gardener who wants a long, leisurely harvest season without the pressure of picking everything all at once.

In the garden, Stowell's Evergreen is a robust and stately plant, with stalks reaching 8 to 10 feet in height. It produces large, 8-to-9-inch ears filled with 12 to 16 rows of deep, pearly-white kernels. This variety is the "Big Kahuna" for canning and freezing because of its heavy yield and high sugar content, which holds up beautifully during preservation. It is a late-season variety that pairs perfectly with early-maturing corns to keep fresh ears on your table all summer long. At The Seed Guy®, our seeds are tested for elite germination and heavy-duty vigor, ensuring you can grow the white sweet corn that has been the gold standard for quality for over 175 years.

    Stowell's Evergreen Corn Planting Instructions:

    1. When to Plant: Stowell's Evergreen is a warm-weather crop that requires warm soil to germinate successfully. Sow seeds directly into the garden only after the soil has reached at least 65°F and the danger of frost is completely gone.

    2. Preparation: Corn is a "heavy feeder" that thrives in nitrogen-rich soil. Before planting, work in a generous amount of compost or aged manure. This variety grows quite tall, so choose a location with full sun and protection from heavy winds if possible.

    3. Sowing: For effective wind pollination, corn must be planted in blocks of at least 4 rows. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space them 8-12 inches apart in rows 30-36 inches apart. Ensure the soil is well-watered after sowing to kickstart germination.

    4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings reach 4 inches in height, thin them to ensure they aren't crowded. Because corn has shallow roots, avoid deep cultivation around the stalks. Provide consistent moisture, especially during the silking stage, as water stress can lead to poorly filled ears.

    5. Pests and Diseases: Common pests include corn earworms and aphids. Check the silks regularly and consider using organic deterrents if needed. To prevent disease, rotate your corn crop every year and ensure there is enough space between plants for proper air circulation.
