Barley Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Barley can be planted in very early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. It enjoys the cool weather of the early season.
2. Preparation: Select a location with full sun and well-draining soil. It doesn't need heavy fertilization, but a clear, weed-free seedbed is essential.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1 inch deep. For a "field" look, you can broadcast the seeds and lightly rake them into the soil.
4. Care: Barley is a low-maintenance crop. Keep the area weeded until the barley is about 6 inches tall; after that, it will shade out most competition.
5. Pests and Diseases: Birds are the biggest fans of ripening grain. Harvest when the heads are golden and the kernels are "rock hard" when bitten.
