Black Beauty Zucchini Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Zucchini is a warm-weather fan. Direct sow in the garden once the soil is at least 70°F and the danger of frost is long gone.
2. Preparation: These are "hungry" plants! Dig a hole and fill it with a mix of soil and aged compost or manure to create a nutrient-rich "hill" for your seeds.
3. Sowing: Plant 2-3 seeds per hill, 1 inch deep. Once they are a few inches tall, thin to the strongest single plant. If you are planting in rows, space them at least 3 feet apart.
4. Care: Water at the base of the plant to avoid getting the leaves wet, which can lead to powdery mildew. Zucchini flowers are edible too! Just make sure to leave the female flowers (the ones with the tiny baby squash at the base) to grow into your harvest.
5. Pests and Diseases: Squash bugs are the main culprit here. Hand-picking or using boards on the ground to trap them overnight is very effective. Harvest the zucchini when they are 6-8 inches long for the best flavor and texture.
