Red Romaine Lettuce Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Romaine likes cool weather. Sow seeds 4 weeks before the last frost in spring. For a fall harvest, sow 6-8 weeks before the first expected frost.
2. Preparation: Lettuce needs nitrogen-rich soil. Work in plenty of compost or aged manure. Ensure the soil is loose so the shallow roots can spread easily.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep. Lettuce seeds need a small amount of light to trigger germination, so do not bury them deep. Keep the soil surface moist with a gentle misting.
4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings are 3 inches tall, thin them to 10-12 inches apart to allow the upright heads to form. Romaine requires consistent moisture; if the soil dries out too much, the leaves can become tough or bitter.
5. Pests and Diseases: Red Romaine is generally hardy, but keep an eye out for aphids that might hide in the tall leaves. It can also be susceptible to "downy mildew" if the leaves stay wet overnight. To prevent this, always water at the base of the plant early in the morning.
