Green Arrow Pea Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Peas are "cool weather" specialists. Get them in the ground as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring—even if a light frost is still possible. They thrive in the 50°F to 70°F range. For a fall crop, plant about 8-10 weeks before your first expected frost.
2. Preparation: Select a location with full sun and well-draining soil. Since peas provide their own nitrogen, they don't need heavy fertilizers. However, a light application of phosphorus and potassium before planting can help with pod development.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart. To speed up germination, you can soak your seeds in room-temperature water for 12-24 hours before planting. Space your rows about 18-24 inches apart to allow for easy harvesting.
4. Care: While these are bush peas, the sheer weight of the pods will pull the vines down. We recommend providing a low trellis, chicken wire, or even sturdy twigs for the vines to cling to. Water at the base of the plant; keeping the leaves dry is the best way to prevent mildew.
5. Pests and Diseases: Aphids can be a nuisance, but a simple blast from the garden hose usually clears them off. Harvest frequently! The more you pick Green Arrow peas, the more the plant will produce. Don't let the pods get too "fat" or the peas will lose their signature sweetness.
