Long Island Improved - Brussels Sprouts Planting Instructions:
1. Timing: Brussels Sprouts require a long, cool growing season. For most regions, sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost, or start in mid-summer for a late fall harvest.
2. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. If starting indoors, transplant to the garden once seedlings are 4-6 inches tall.
3. Care: These are "heavy feeders." Work plenty of compost into the soil before planting. Ensure consistent watering, especially during the heat of late summer, to prevent the sprouts from becoming bitter.
4. Harvesting: Begin harvesting from the bottom of the stalk upward when the sprouts are firm and about 1 inch in diameter. For the absolute best flavor, wait until after the first one or two frosts of the season.
5. Pests & Disease: Use row covers to protect young plants from cabbage loopers and aphids. Crop rotation is essential to prevent soil-borne diseases in the brassica family.
