Catskill Brussels Sprouts – The Heavy-Yielding Heirloom for Firm, Sweet, and Nutritious Sprouts

Developed in 1941 by Arthur White of Arkport, New York, the Catskill variety quickly became a favorite for its incredible productivity on sturdy, compact plants. Unlike some varieties that grow quite tall and require staking, Catskill stays manageable while still being loaded with large, 1-to-2-inch diameter sprouts. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this heirloom to anyone who wants a "gourmet" cool-weather crop that doesn't take up the whole garden.

These sprouts are deep green, firm, and packed with that classic, savory flavor that only gets better as the weather cools down. Any vegetable that can go from seed to table while providing both a stunning visual and incredible flavor is a gardener's dream, and Catskill is a nutritional powerhouse that thrives when other plants begin to fade. Because it is so cold-hardy, a light frost actually helps to convert the starches in the sprouts into sugars, making them exceptionally sweet and tender for your autumn meals.

    Catskill Brussels Sprouts Planting Instructions:

    1. Timing: Brussels Sprouts need a long growing season. For the best flavor, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost to transplant for a summer crop, or start in mid-summer for a late fall harvest.

    2. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. If starting indoors, transplant to the garden once the seedlings have several true leaves and the soil is workable.

    3. Care: Brussels Sprouts are "heavy feeders" and need consistent moisture. Mulching around the base of the plants helps retain moisture and keeps the roots cool during the warmer months of their growth.

    4. Harvesting: Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upward as they become firm and reach about 1 inch in diameter. Many gardeners find that the flavor is best after the plant has experienced at least one or two light frosts.

    5. Pests & Disease: Watch for cabbage worms and aphids. Maintaining healthy soil and using row covers early on can help prevent most common issues associated with brassicas.
