Sugar Ann Pea Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Sugar Ann is built for the cold! Plant outdoors 4-6 weeks before your last spring frost. Because it matures so fast, it is also perfect for a "second harvest" planted in late summer for a fall crop.
2. Preparation: Peas "fix" their own nitrogen, so avoid heavy nitrogen fertilizers which will give you lots of leaves but very few peas. Instead, ensure your soil is well-draining and has a bit of phosphorus to encourage bloom and pod development.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 2 inches apart. If you are planting in containers, use a high-quality potting mix and ensure you have drainage holes at the bottom. A quick 12-hour soak before planting will help the seeds "wake up" faster.
4. Care: Although Sugar Ann is a dwarf variety, a small 2-foot trellis will keep your harvest clean and easy to see. Water consistently; snap peas need steady moisture to keep those pods succulent and crisp rather than dry and tough.
5. Pests and Diseases: This variety is naturally resistant to Pea Enation Mosaic Virus and Powdery Mildew. To keep them healthy, avoid overhead watering in the evening and harvest pods frequently to keep the plant in "production mode."
