Waldman's Green Lettuce – The Pro-Grade Heirloom Favorite for Rapid Growth and Bountiful, Frilly Leaf Harvests

Shop the highest quality Waldman's Green Lettuce seeds for a high-performance garden harvest. When you need a lettuce that is dependable, fast-growing, and consistent, Waldman's Green is the "Big Kahuna." An improved version of the classic Grand Rapids variety, this heirloom is the gold standard for leaf lettuce. At The Seed Guy®, we recommend Waldman's Green for the gardener who wants a "heavy hitter"—it produces large, wavy, light-green leaves that are exceptionally uniform in size and shape. Its flavor is famously mild and refreshing, making it the perfect everyday lettuce for sandwiches and salads.

In the garden, Waldman's Green is a top-tier producer. It is favored by commercial growers and home gardeners alike because it is very slow to bolt and maintains its crisp texture even in fluctuating spring temperatures. It is a fantastic companion plant for beets and cucumbers, and because it grows so vigorously, it is often one of the first varieties ready for harvest. It is a "cut-and-come-again" superstar; simply snip the outer leaves and the plant will keep pushing out new, frilly growth all season long. At The Seed Guy®, our seeds are tested for elite germination and rapid vigor, ensuring you get the most productive lettuce bed in the neighborhood.

    Waldman's Green Lettuce Planting Instructions:

    1. When to Plant: Start seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. Waldman’s is very fast-growing, so you can do succession plantings every 10 days for a non-stop supply.

    2. Preparation: This variety thrives in well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Add compost to the top 2 inches of soil before sowing to provide a quick nutrient boost.

    3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep. Because the seeds are small, many gardeners prefer to mix them with a little sand to ensure even distribution. Lightly firm the soil over the seeds.

    4. Thinning and Care: Thin seedlings to 8-10 inches apart for large, lush plants. Ensure the plants receive at least 1 inch of water per week. This variety responds very well to a light organic fertilizer halfway through its growth cycle.

    5. Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, which are attracted to the tender, frilly leaves. Waldman's Green is notably resistant to "Tip Burn," a common lettuce issue, but it can still be affected by mosaic virus. To prevent disease, keep the garden free of weeds and avoid handling the plants when they are wet.
