Waldman's Green Lettuce Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Start seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. Waldman’s is very fast-growing, so you can do succession plantings every 10 days for a non-stop supply.
2. Preparation: This variety thrives in well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Add compost to the top 2 inches of soil before sowing to provide a quick nutrient boost.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep. Because the seeds are small, many gardeners prefer to mix them with a little sand to ensure even distribution. Lightly firm the soil over the seeds.
4. Thinning and Care: Thin seedlings to 8-10 inches apart for large, lush plants. Ensure the plants receive at least 1 inch of water per week. This variety responds very well to a light organic fertilizer halfway through its growth cycle.
5. Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for slugs and snails, which are attracted to the tender, frilly leaves. Waldman's Green is notably resistant to "Tip Burn," a common lettuce issue, but it can still be affected by mosaic virus. To prevent disease, keep the garden free of weeds and avoid handling the plants when they are wet.
