Sugar Baby Watermelon – The "Picnic Perfect" Icebox Variety for Sweet, Juicy, and Refreshing Summer Treats

Shop the highest quality Sugar Baby Watermelon seeds for a harvest that defines the peak of summer. When it comes to flavor in a compact package, Sugar Baby is the "Sweetness Superstar." This classic heirloom is famous for its small, 8-to-10-pound fruits that fit perfectly in the refrigerator (the "icebox"). At The Seed Guy®, we believe we aren't just selling seeds; we are selling the Saturday morning in the garden with the family and the grandkids, the sticky-faced smiles of that first bite of a sun-warmed melon, and the pride of a harvest that brings everyone together.

In the garden, Sugar Baby is a space-saving miracle, producing vines that are much shorter than giant varieties, making it ideal for smaller backyards or even large containers. The skin is a dark, "black-green" color that hides a shockingly bright, deep-red flesh with a very high sugar content. This variety is the premier choice for anyone who wants to "get your chill on"—offering a crisp, refreshing crunch that is the ultimate reward after a long day in the sun. It is a fantastic companion plant for radishes and oregano, which can help keep the melon patch healthy. At The Seed Guy®, our seeds are tested for elite germination, ensuring you get heavy yields of gourmet-quality melons that are as sweet as honey.

    Sugar Baby Watermelon Planting Instructions:

    1. When to Plant: Watermelons are the "Heat Kings." Do not plant until the soil is at least 70-75°F. In many areas, this is 2-3 weeks after the last frost.

    2. Preparation: They love "sandy," well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Build up hills to ensure good drainage and to help the sun warm the soil quickly.

    3. Sowing: Plant 3-4 seeds per hill, 1 inch deep. Space hills 4 feet apart. Once the plants are 3 inches tall, thin to the two strongest vines.

    4. Care: Water deeply during the flowering and fruit-setting stage, but "taper off" the watering as the melons reach full size—this helps concentrate the sugars for a sweeter taste. To tell if it's ripe, look for the "tendril" closest to the melon to turn brown and dry, and check for a buttery-yellow spot on the bottom.

    5. Pests and Diseases: Watch for Cucumber Beetles. To protect the melons from ground rot, you can set them on a bed of straw or a small piece of wood as they ripen.

    Citrullus lanatus
