Crimson Sweet Watermelon Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Watermelons need heat! Wait until the soil is at least 70°F and there is no risk of frost.
2. Preparation: These plants are "hungry and thirsty." Dig a deep hole and fill it with composted manure. Building "hills" helps the soil stay warm and provides better drainage for the roots.
3. Sowing: Plant 3-4 seeds per hill, 1 inch deep. Space hills 6-8 feet apart to give the vines room to roam. Thin to the two strongest vines.
4. Care: Water deeply during the first few weeks. As the melons reach full size, reduce watering slightly to allow the sugars to concentrate.
5. Pests and Diseases: Watch for Cucumber Beetles. To tell if your Crimson Sweet is ripe, look for the "ground spot" to turn a creamy yellow and wait for the curly tendril nearest the fruit to turn brown and dry.
