Black Diamond Watermelon Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Direct sow when the soil is warm (above 70°F) and the weather is consistently hot. Black Diamonds love the sun!
2. Preparation: Give these giants plenty of room. Prepare hills with plenty of organic matter and ensure the location gets full sun all day long.
3. Sowing: Plant 3 seeds per hill, 1 inch deep. Space hills 8 feet apart. Once the vines are 6 inches long, thin to the strongest plant to ensure all the energy goes into those giant melons.
4. Care: Deep watering is essential. If the plant gets thirsty, the fruit won't reach its full size. Avoid overhead watering to keep the leaves healthy.
5. Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for Squash Vine Borers. Harvest when the bottom of the melon turns from white to a buttery yellow and the skin is tough enough to resist a thumbnail scratch.
