Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage – The Historic Pointed Heirloom Prized for Speed and Sweetness

Dating back to 1840, the Early Jersey Wakefield is one of the oldest and most beloved cabbage varieties in America. It is instantly recognizable by its unique, conical, or "pointed" heads that grow to a manageable 2 to 3 pounds. At The Seed Guy, we highly recommend this heirloom for home gardeners because it is one of the earliest cabbages to mature, often beating other varieties to the table by weeks. Its compact size makes it an ideal choice for smaller garden plots or raised beds where space is at a premium.

The flavor of Early Jersey Wakefield is exceptionally sweet and mild with a tender, crisp texture that is world-class for fresh coleslaws and salads. Any vegetable that can go from seed to table while providing both a stunning visual and incredible flavor is a gardener's dream, and this cabbage is a true "all-star" in that category. Because it is resistant to splitting and highly frost-tolerant, it is a dependable producer for both early spring and late autumn harvests.

Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage Planting Instructions:

    1. Timing: Cabbage is a cool-season crop. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost, or sow in mid-summer for a fall harvest.

    2. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. If starting indoors, transplant to the garden once seedlings have 3-4 true leaves and the soil can be worked.

    3. Care: Cabbage needs consistent moisture and "heavy feeding" with compost or nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Early Jersey Wakefield is compact, but still appreciates room for air circulation to prevent disease.

    4. Harvesting: Harvest when the pointed heads feel firm and solid to the touch. Cutting the heads while they are still small ensures the most tender flavor.

    5. Pests & Disease: Watch for cabbage loopers and slugs. Using lightweight row covers is a very effective way to keep your cabbage heads pristine and hole-free.
