Honey Rock Melon Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Honey Rocks are "Heat-Seekers." Direct sow only when the soil has reached a steady 70°F in late spring. For an early start in northern zones, sow seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost in peat pots to ensure zero root disturbance during transplanting.
2. Preparation: Choose a location with full sun and rich, well-draining soil. Honey Rocks are "Heavy Feeders," so amend your soil with compost or aged manure. Creating mounds or "hills" about 4-5 feet apart helps with drainage and focuses soil warmth on the roots.
3. Sowing: Plant 3-4 seeds per mound at a depth of 1/2 inch. Once the seedlings are 3 inches tall, thin to the strongest 2 plants per hill. This ensures the vines have enough "Fuel" and space to produce their high-yield harvest.
4. Watering and Care: Provide deep, consistent watering at the base of the plant to avoid leaf mildew. As the melons approach full size, slightly reduce watering to "Lock in the Sugar," which intensifies the flavor of the salmon-orange flesh.
5. Harvesting: This variety is a "Full-Slip" melon. A Honey Rock is ready when the rind beneath the netting turns from green to a creamy tan and the fruit effortlessly "slips" or detaches from the vine with a very slight touch. The fragrance at the stem end will be sweet and unmistakably "Melon-Gold!"
