Shop the highest quality Vates Collard seeds, the gold standard for gardeners who want a dependable, heavy-producing green that stands up to both heat and cold. Known as the "Garden Workhorse," the Vates variety is famous for its large, smooth, dark-green leaves that offer a mild, smoky flavor perfect for traditional Southern braising, healthy wraps, or fresh sautés. While other greens might wilt or bolt, Vates stays "Steady and Strong," making it the premier choice for a reliable harvest from early spring through the first snow.
In the garden, Vates Collards are compact yet incredibly productive, reaching a manageable height that fits perfectly in traditional rows or raised beds. The real magic happens after the first frost; a touch of cold converts the plant's starches into sugars, giving these leaves a "Frost-Kissed Sweetness" that store-bought greens simply can't replicate. Whether you are slow-simmering them with smoked meats or using them as a low-carb alternative for tortillas, our Vates Collards are the fastest way to "get your greens on" with a nutrient-dense, home-grown crunch. It is a fantastic companion plant for rosemary and sage, which help deter pests while adding aromatic beauty to your garden plot. At The Seed Guy®, our seeds are tested for elite germination, ensuring you get a bountiful harvest of dark, leafy greens that are crisp, healthy, and packed with vitamins.

Vates Collard Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: For a spring crop, sow 4-6 weeks before the last frost. For a fall crop (recommended for best flavor), sow 6-8 weeks before the first expected frost.
2. Preparation: Collards are heavy feeders. Work plenty of aged manure or compost into the soil. They prefer a sunny location with well-draining soil and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. If starting indoors, ensure seedlings get plenty of light to prevent them from becoming "leggy" before transplanting.
4. Care: Maintain consistent moisture to keep the leaves tender. Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to keep the roots cool and prevent the soil from drying out during sunny days.
5. Pests and Diseases: Watch for cabbage worms. Covering your crop with a lightweight row cover can prevent moths from laying eggs on the leaves, ensuring your harvest remains hole-free and beautiful.
