Golden Summer Crookneck Squash Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Direct sow in the garden after all danger of frost has passed and the soil is at least 70°F.
2. Preparation: Use a sunny spot with soil that has been amended with compost. Like all squash, Crookneck is a heavy feeder and loves a nutrient-dense home.
3. Sowing: Plant 3 seeds per hill, 1 inch deep. Thin to one plant per hill. If you have limited space, these do very well in large 5-gallon containers.
4. Care: Consistent moisture is key. Water deeply at the base of the plant to avoid splashing the leaves. As the plant grows, you may need to give it a little extra "boost" of organic fertilizer.
5. Pests and Diseases: Squash Vine Borers can be an issue; planting a few weeks later in the season can sometimes help avoid their egg-laying cycle. Harvest when the fruits are 5-6 inches long.
