Vates Blue Scotch Curled Kale – The Compact Garden Champion for Elegant Ruffled Leaves and Heavy Winter Yields

Shop the highest quality Vates Blue Scotch Curled Kale seeds for a productive and decorative garden. If you’ve ever enjoyed a bowl of crispy kale chips, you were likely eating this variety. Vates Blue Scotch is the "Bigwig" of the curly kale world, prized for its compact "dwarf" growing habit and its incredibly beautiful, finely-textured blue-green leaves. At The Seed Guy®, we recommend this variety for the home gardener because it stays low to the ground—reaching only about 12 to 15 inches—which protects it from harsh winter winds and makes it perfect for smaller raised beds or container gardening.

In the garden, Vates Blue Scotch is as tough as it is tasty. It is legendary for its ability to withstand freezing temperatures, and like most kales, its flavor becomes significantly sweeter and more refined after it has been kissed by a frost. It is a fantastic companion plant for aromatic herbs like mint or thyme, and its dense, ruffled foliage makes it a striking addition to any edible landscape. Because it is a prolific "cut-and-come-again" variety, you can harvest the tender outer leaves all winter long while the center continues to produce. At The Seed Guy®, our seeds are tested for elite germination and uniform growth, ensuring you get the perfect, curly crunch every time.

Vates Blue Scotch Curled Kale Planting Instructions:

    1. When to Plant: This kale loves cool weather. Sow seeds directly into the garden 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost. For a fall harvest, sow seeds in late summer so the plants are established before the first freeze.

    2. Preparation: Vates Blue Scotch prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Work in plenty of compost before planting. This variety is a light feeder compared to other brassicas but still performs best in nutrient-dense soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0.

    3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Space seeds about 1 inch apart. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination. You will see those signature ruffled leaves begin to appear shortly after the first true leaves emerge.

    4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings are 3 inches tall, thin them to 12 inches apart. This spacing ensures proper airflow between the dense, curly leaves. Provide 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, and mulch around the base to keep the soil moisture consistent.

    5. Pests and Diseases: The deep curls can sometimes hide aphids or cabbage worms. Check your plants regularly and wash the leaves thoroughly after harvest. Practicing crop rotation will help prevent common soil-borne diseases.

    Brassica oleracea var. acephalla
