Shop the highest quality Hearts of Gold Melon seeds and reclaim the flavor of the classic American garden. Developed in the late 1890s, Hearts of Gold is the "Blue Ribbon Standard" for backyard cantaloupes, prized for its deep orange, thick-walled flesh and a cavity so small it’s practically bursting with fruit. While modern grocery store melons are bred for tough transit, this heirloom is the "Gourmet’s Choice"—bred purely for an incredible, honey-sweet flavor and a floral aroma that signals "summer is here" from across the yard.
In the garden, Hearts of Gold is a vigorous and reliable producer, yielding 2 to 3-pound fruits that are perfectly sized for a single-serving breakfast bowl. It is the "Vining Victory" of the melon patch, featuring heavily netted rinds that protect the succulent "Gold" inside. Because it is a shorter-season variety compared to giant melons, it is an excellent "Northern Champion" for gardeners with shorter summers who still want that deep, sun-ripened sweetness. At The Seed Guy®, our seeds are tested for elite germination, ensuring you get a bountiful harvest of juicy melons that are firm, fragrant, and far superior to anything found on a supermarket shelf.

Hearts of Gold Melon Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Melons are "Sun-Worshippers." Direct sow only when the soil is consistently warm (at least 70°F) in late spring. In northern climates, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost in peat pots to avoid disturbing the roots during transplanting.
2. Preparation: Choose a location with full sun and rich, well-draining soil. Melons are "Heavy Feeders," so work plenty of compost or aged manure into the soil before planting. Create mounds or "hills" about 3-4 feet apart to help with drainage and soil warmth.
3. Sowing: Plant 3-4 seeds per mound at a depth of 1/2 inch. Once the seedlings are 2 inches tall, thin to the strongest 2 plants per hill. If planting in rows, space plants 12-18 inches apart with 5-6 feet between rows to allow the vines to roam.
4. Watering and Care: Provide deep, consistent watering at the base of the plant (avoiding the leaves) until the fruit reaches full size. As the melons begin to ripen, decrease watering slightly to "concentrate" the sugars for a sweeter flavor. Mulching with straw helps keep the fruit off the soil and retains moisture.
5. Harvesting: Look for the "Half-Slip" or "Full-Slip" stage. A Hearts of Gold melon is ready when the rind turns from green to tan-yellow and the fruit easily "slips" or detaches from the vine with a gentle tug. The intoxicating sweet aroma at the stem end is the final green light to eat!
